This residency painting program is an intensive course in the Academic method of painting and drawing in oils. The course is open to all levels of artists, as the teacher will approach each student on his or her level. There is no portfolio required for this course. Any one may apply.

The entire course revolves around working from the nude model using the sight-size method. For three months, students will be immersed in the sequential completion of several drawings and oil painting projects, while learning accurate measurement, paint handling, and keying.

You will complete drawings in charcoal and transfer to the canvas and continue to develop it as a grisaille painting, as a natural progression from a charcoal drawing.  You will tackle several projects in order to learn and strengthen your understanding of keying, tone/value and temperature shifts. By the end of this exercise, students would have learned about drawing in paint and understanding keying, tone/value versus color.

You will be introduced to a “limited palette” as a natural progression to grisaille.
Using this palette, you will learn how to develop scales of skin tone that is easier to control. By the third month, you will be introduced to an “extended palette” and will focus on mixing more colorful scales of flesh tones and a broader range on values/tones. Using this “extended palette” in the final pose, you will paint a large scale painting.

This is a very comprehensive program that requires commitment and dedication.
Throughout the course, students will receive individual and group critiques; Additionionally,  they will be able to follow the instructor as he demos the different stages.
