Dirk Dzimirsky’s Advanced Realism in Portrait and Figure drawing
July 1 – July 30, 2012
This intensive 4 week workshop is for the intermediate to advanced student who wants to take realism in drawing to the next level. Although focusing on drawing, all concepts learned from this course will greatly benefit your painting skills as well.
Students will learn how to create lifelike representational portrait and figure drawings that have depth and atmosphere. Starting with a Block-In, focusing on angles, gesture, and the fullness of the forms, we create a sound line drawing that will have all necessary information for a complete, solid rendering.
From there we slowly build up the tonal values in order to utilize and control their relationship to create light effects as well as 3D illusions. While building up the drawing in this layering approach we keep adding details and textures resulting in a lifelike rendering. We will study control and utilization of all contrasts, like tonal contrasts or sharp/soft contrast and accents to create stunning visual interest, that leads the viewer’s eye, creating a hierarchical visual story. Working from live models, we will study the use of basic anatomical knowledge to depict solid forms.
During the workshop we will concentrate on portrait drawing and figure drawing from live models. Special interest will also be paid to rendering realistic hair and clothing. The instructor will use demos and intensive one on one teaching and critic at your easel. Instructor will answer all questions and will be discuss studio practices like the business aspects of portrait commissions.
Daily instruction : 30 hours each week. Over 120 hours of total instruction.
TUITION: €2000
